FAQs
What is DOT.TUNES? DOT.TUNES is a feature rich application which allows you to share your iTunes music with your friends and family around the world, with clients, band members, between all the computers in your house or between home and work. It can also act as a remote control for iTunes allowing you to control the music in your house via any computer, PDA, web enabled mobile phone - even with a Sony PSP.
How does it work? DOT.TUNES reads your iTunes music library including all your playlists and creates an in-memory SQL database of all the information. This database is used to create web pages, podcasts, navigation and a fast search engine for browsing your tracks via the net. DOT.TUNES does not use web-sharing, it contains a powerful web server specifically designed to serve music from iTunes.
Can anyone listen to my music? You decide which artists, albums or playlists are available online. You can create Usernames and passwords so that only authorized people can login and view your tracks. You can even specify which playlists each user can access. When user A logs in, 25 tracks may be available yet 200 tracks may be available for user B etc.
Can people actually download and listen to my music? Yes, you can email people a link to your DOT.TUNES Server and they can download and listen to the audio files you make available to them.
Is this legal? Yes. You are in control of the music you publish. DOT.TUNES was created by a group of professional musicians who use DOT.TUNES to share work-in-progress and original compositions. For example, you can create a track in GarageBand and use DOT.TUNES to make the track available to friends and family. Just make sure you own the copyright on any files you publish.
Can DOT.TUNES create Podcasts? Yes, it can create a podcast from any tracks in iTunes and then serve the XML and audio files to subscribers.
Can DOT.TUNES stream tracks one after the other? Yes, the free DOT.TUNES Client application is included in the download and it can stream one track after the other from a DOT.TUNES Server. The Client application even allows you to download entire playlists from a remote server with a single click. The DOT.TUNES Client software is a separate feature-rich application which is completely free - you can give it to your friends and family so they can listen to your music.
We are working hard to enable tracks to play one after the other with DOT.iPHONE, however the iPhone forces tracks to play in a custom Quicktime Player which makes multi-play difficult. We are working on a solution.
What is the cost to register? DOT.TUNES is FREE. Plug-ins cost between $10 and $100, but for a limited time, you can get all plug-ins and bundles for 50% off!
Is DOT.TUNES Universal Binary? Yes, DOT.TUNES Version 4 is Universal Binary.
When I log into my DOT.TUNES server from my iPhone, the login page and the first page look normal, but when I click on a Playlist, it looks funny, and I can’t play my music, what happened? When you are accessing DOT.TUNES from your iPhone, you need to be sure that the JavaScript setting is set to ON.
To determine whether your iPhone settings are correct, go into the Settings section of your iPhone.
Scroll down and select the Safari option.
In the section titled "Security", slide the setting bar for "JavaScript" to "On".
After you have done that, select "Clear Cache".
Return to Safari and log back into your DT Server.
What is a Plug-in? A Plug-in is a computer program that interacts with a host application (a web browser or an email client, for example) to provide a certain, usually very specific, function "on demand". DOT.TUNES plug-ins enhance your experience by expanding the suite of possibilities of your DOT.TUNES server.
Our plug-ins include the iPHONE Plug-in with its customized interface allowing you to experience DOT.TUNES on your iPhone, and the Wii Plug-in, which allows you to access your DOT.TUNES server from your television. Check out our Plug-Ins page for a listing and description of all our plug-ins.
